What Does CRA Do?

The California Rosemaling Association's largest function is the annual Convention and Business Meeting held each fall. The Convention features classes with well-known Rosemaling teachers such as American Gold Medal Winners and teachers from Norway. Besides the classes, the Convention offers members the opportunity to meet with one another, share ideas, learn about opportunities to study, teach and sell Rosemalling.

CRA publishes the "California Rosemaler" four times a year. The newsletter features color pictures of Rosemaling often showcasing a museum piece or private collection piece.

The newsletter also contains various articles of interest to rosemalers and information on meetings, conventions, craft fairs, and Scandinavian events.

Many of the members of CRA are available to demonstrate and lecture as well as teach classes.

What is the California Rosemaling Association?

CRA was formed in 1987 and officially charter in November 1988. The purpose of the association is to promote the interests in the traditional art of Norwegian Rosemaling. Members are committed to preserving Rosemaling as a unique art form.

What is Rosemaling?

Rosemaling is the beautiful Norwegian folk painting, which dates from the 17th century. This unique style of painting, with its graceful scrolls, leaves, and flowers, was influenced by the Viking woodcarvings and metalwork of the 9th century, as well as the Acanthus leaf and Baroque style borrowed from Greece and Rome. Rosemaling has been steadily gaining popularity in the United States since the early 1950's.

Who Belongs To CRA?

Membership is open to anyone-anywhere. CRA has approximately a hundred sixty members. Some are expert rosemalers; many are beginners; and some don't paint at all, but love to study the art form!
