A Bit About This Year's Teachers

Lise Lorentzen has been rosemaling since the age 12 and her art covers over 40 years of experience, specializing in custom painting of woodenware, furniture, and home interiors. Lise has been fortunate to study under many renowned Norwegian and American artist’s. They include Sigmund Aarseth, Karen Jenson, Dorothy Petersen, John Gundersen, Shirley Evenstad, etc. In 2009, Lise completed the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) folk arts apprenticeship program studying with her mentor and master artist Eldrid Arntzen, a National Endowment of the Arts recipient. Lise, herself has been a master teacher, receiving a grant from The Maryland State Arts Council in 2015-2016, passing on Rosemaling to her apprentice, Michele Fiore Wimmers.

In November of 2017, Lise stared recording rosemaling videos for her Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ArtofLise1/. She stared a YouTube channel, Rosemaling by Art of Lise, in July of 2019, and taught her first online class through the Illinois Norsk Rosemaling Association (INRA), in July of 2020. Since then, she has taught may online classes for the INRA and other rosemaling groups, plus she has her own teaching program with online and in-person classes. Lise is a member and teacher through Vesterheim, Norwegian-Norwegian American Museum and competes in the museum’s Folk Art Competition. She has received 6 points towards a gold medal through Vesterheim with two red and two white ribbons and has received 5 honorable mentions over the last 20 years. Currently, she is teaching via zoom for Vesterheim as well as for various other national organizations. She has an active online studio zoom class schedule that she runs as well. Her work has been displayed at the Staten Island Museum, the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in Manhattan, the Liriodendron Gallery in Bel Air, Maryland, where had a one women show in 2015. Currently, Lise’s work may be found at The Vesterheim Museum Store, Decorah, Iowa, The Harford Artist Association in Bel Air, Maryland, The Arts by the Bay Gallery in Havre de Grace, Maryland as well as online at her Etsy shop, Art of Lise Creations. Lise also has at artist licensing contract with one of the leading Scandinavian Gift suppliers, Gift Chalet Auburn. In June of 2016, Lise was featured at the 6th annual Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival in Baltimore.

Lise is a professional educator with a BA in art History and a MS in Special Education. She was a GED Special Education Teacher with the NYC Board of Education for many years until the time she and her husband began their family. Lise, her husband Ken, their three children, Annelise, Silje and Axel, and their two dogs, Ruben and Otis now reside in Bel Air, Maryland.

Svitlana Ivasyuk is a Ukrainian American artist who lives and creates in San Diego, California. She was born and raised in Ukraine where rich national culture, methodology, and creativity were to shape and deeply influence her desire to create and bring beauty into everyday life, to develop and evolve as an artist, to be open and compassionate.

While having a formal education as a mathematician Svitlana is a self-taught artist. She creates in different styles including traditional Ukrainian decorative art of Petrykivka, watercolor, doll making, macrame, beadwork, and neuro-art.

Her artworks have been exhibited at Las Laguna Art Gallery, Ukrainian American Archives and Museum in Michigan, San Diego Watercolor Society, and are owned by private art collectors all over the US and overseas as well. Recently her watercolor painting earned an Honorable Mention Award at SDWS.

Svitlana enjoys teaching others the magic of art, she conducts numerous workshops and private lessons in various painting styles.
